A slotting attachment is a smart way to get more versatility out of your vertical mill. Mounted to the ram, it changes the machine’s cutting action from standard rotary motion to a vertical stroking movement. That added function allows the mill to handle operations that would otherwise require a separate machine or more specialized tooling.

One of the biggest benefits of a slotting attachment is its ability to machine internal features that are difficult to produce with a standard milling cutter. It is commonly used for cutting internal keyways in gear hubs and pulley bores, as well as machining internal splines for mechanical power transmission parts. It can also be used to create square or rectangular internal openings from pre drilled round holes.

Beyond internal cutting, a slotting attachment is also useful for light shaping work such as grooves, flat surfaces, and contours on smaller parts. This makes it a practical solution for shops that need more flexibility without adding another machine to the floor.

For low volume work, repair jobs, or one off parts, a slotting attachment can also be a strong alternative to broaching. It eliminates the need for custom broach tools and gives operators another way to handle internal features that standard cutters cannot easily reach.

For shops looking to expand the capability of their vertical mill, a slotting attachment is a simple and effective upgrade. It adds flexibility, improves efficiency, and helps make an already valuable machine even more useful.
